Can I Have Lip Blush with a Cold Sore?

Rachael Tsang

Lip blush has become increasingly popular in recent years as more people seek to enhance their natural beauty with semi-permanent makeup. This cosmetic procedure involves the application of pigment to the lips, creating a fuller, more defined, and naturally tinted appearance. However, for clients who suffer from the cold sore virus, also known as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), it’s essential to approach this procedure with caution.

Understanding the Cold Sore Virus

HSV-1 is a common viral infection that typically manifests as cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth. It is highly contagious and once infected with the virus, it remains in the body, and while symptoms can be managed, there is no cure. Stress, illness and trauma to the lips are known to trigger the virus, lip blush included.

The Risks of Lip Blush for HSV-1 Sufferers

  1. Potential for Reactivation: The trauma to the lips caused by the needle during a lip blush procedure can trigger an outbreak of cold sores. Even if a client hasn’t had an outbreak in years, the physical stress on the lips can cause the dormant virus to reactivate. This not only affects the healing process but can also lead to discomfort and additional complications.

  2. Infection Risk: If a cold sore outbreak occurs during or immediately after the lip blush procedure, it increases the risk of infection. Open sores combined with the healing process from the tattooing can create an environment where bacteria thrive, potentially leading to severe infections.

  3. Impact on Healing and Results: Cold sores can severely disrupt the healing process, leading to uneven pigment distribution or scarring. This can result in an unsatisfactory outcome, where the desired lip blush effect is compromised. In some cases, clients may need additional sessions to correct the pigment, but this comes with the added risk of triggering more outbreaks.

  4. Spread of the Virus: During an active cold sore outbreak, the virus can easily spread, not just to other parts of the client’s face but also to the practitioner. Although professional artists use sterilised equipment and take precautions, there is still a minimal risk of transmission, which is why it is generally advised to avoid any cosmetic procedure during an active outbreak.

Precautions to Take Before Proceeding

  1. Consultation is Key: A thorough consultation before the procedure is essential. Clients should inform their permanent makeup artist if they have a history of cold sores. This information allows the artist to plan accordingly and take extra precautions, such as scheduling the procedure when the virus is dormant.

  2. Antiviral Medication: For clients with a history of HSV-1, taking antiviral medication, such as acyclovir or valacyclovir, before and after the procedure can help prevent an outbreak. It’s often recommended to start the medication a few days before the lip blush session and continue for several days after to reduce the risk of reactivation.

  3. Post-Procedure Care: Aftercare is crucial for all lip blush clients, but especially for those with HSV-1. Following the permanent makeup artist's aftercare instructions can help minimise the risk of complications. This might include avoiding certain foods, staying out of the sun, and applying any recommended ointments or balms to keep the lips moisturised and protected.

  4. Timing the Procedure: If possible, schedule the lip blush session during a time when the client’s immune system is strong, and they are not under significant stress. This reduces the likelihood of an outbreak and promotes better healing.

Final Thoughts

While lip blush is a fantastic way to achieve beautifully tinted lips, clients with the cold sore virus must proceed with caution. By taking the proper precautions and working closely with a knowledgeable artist, the risks can be minimised, allowing clients to enjoy their new look without the fear of complications. Open communication and careful planning are the keys to ensuring a safe and successful outcome.
