How to choose a permanent makeup artist or microblading artist

Rachael Tsang

Choosing the right permanent makeup artist is essential for achieving the beautiful results you desire. Permanent makeup can significantly enhance your natural features, but the process requires skill, precision, and an understanding of individual needs. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make an informed decision in choosing an artist.

1. Research and Recommendations

Start with Research:

- Online Search: Begin by searching for permanent makeup artists in your area. Look at their websites and social media profiles to get an idea of their work and style.

- Reviews and Testimonials: Check online reviews and testimonials from previous clients. Pay attention to feedback regarding their experiences, the quality of the results, and the artist’s professionalism.

Ask for Recommendations:

- Friends and Family: If someone you know has had permanent makeup done, ask about their experience and if they would recommend their artist.

- Beauty Professionals: Consult with your regular beauty professionals, such as hairstylists or aestheticians, who may have reliable recommendations.

2. Check Qualifications and Experience

Certifications and Training:

- Licensing: Ensure the artist is licensed and complies with local regulations for permanent makeup procedures.

- Training: Verify that they have received formal training from reputable institutions. Look for certifications from recognised permanent makeup organisations.

Experience:

- Years in Practice: Experience matters in permanent makeup. Look for artists who have been practicing for several years and have a solid portfolio of work.

- Specialisations: Some artists specialise in specific areas, such as eyebrows, eyeliner or lips. Some do all treatment areas but may have a preference to a specific treatment. Choose an artist whose expertise aligns with the type of permanent makeup you want.

3. Portfolio of Work

Examine Before-and-After Photos:

- Portfolio Review: A professional artist will have a portfolio showcasing their work. Look for before-and-after photos to assess the quality and consistency of their results.

- Style and Technique: Ensure their style matches your preferences. Some artists may have a more natural approach, while others might offer bolder, more defined looks.

4. Consultation and Communication

Schedule a Consultation:

- Initial Meeting: A consultation is a crucial step in the process. It allows you to discuss your goals, ask questions, and evaluate the artist’s communication skills.

- Health and Safety: During the consultation, the artist should enquire about your medical history, skin type, and any allergies to ensure safe and suitable procedures.

Evaluate Communication:

- Clarity and Patience: The artist should clearly explain the procedure, aftercare, and potential risks. They should be patient and willing to answer all your questions.

- Personalised Approach: A good artist will listen to your preferences and provide professional advice tailored to your needs.

5. Hygiene and Safety Practices

Inspect the Clinic

- Cleanliness: The clinic should be clean, organized, and adhere to strict hygiene standards. Observe the general cleanliness and the handling of equipment.

- Sterilisation: Ensure that all tools and equipment are properly sterilised. Single-use needles and disposable items should be standard practice.

Health and Safety Protocols:

- Compliance: The artist should follow all health and safety regulations, including the use of gloves and appropriate disposal methods for used materials.

6. Understanding the Cost

Transparent Pricing:

- Breakdown of Costs: The artist should provide a clear breakdown of the costs involved, including the initial procedure, touch-ups, and any additional fees.

- Value Over Cost: While it’s important to consider your budget, prioritise quality and experience over the lowest price. High-quality permanent makeup is an investment in your appearance and confidence.

7. Trust Your Instincts

Comfort and Confidence:

- Personal Comfort: Choose an artist with whom you feel comfortable and confident. Trust your instincts about their professionalism and approach.

- Reputation and Results: A reputable artist with a track record of satisfied clients is more likely to provide you with the results you desire.
